Rivet Hole Size: Complete Chart & Drilling Guide for Perfect Installation

2026-05-12

During the riveting process, a hole that is too small can damage the rivet, reduce the strength of the joint, or even prevent the rivet from being installed. Conversely, a hole that is too large can cause the rivet to slip and rotate, leading to gradual loosening over time and preventing a secure connection. Whether you’re working on industrial projects, automotive repairs, or DIY projects, it’s essential to ensure that the rivet holes are drilled with precision.

What Is Rivet Hole Size?

Rivet hole size refers to the diameter of the hole drilled into the materials being joined, specifically designed to fit the shank of the rivet.

Standard Rivet Hole Size Chart (All Common Rivet Types)

The correct rivet hole size varies based on the type of rivet (blind, solid, pop rivet) and its diameter. Below is a universal chart that covers the most common rivet sizes used in industrial, automotive, and DIY applications. All measurements are in inches  and millimeters , the two most widely used systems for rivet hole drilling.

Rivet Hole Size of Complete Chart & Drilling Guide

How to Determine the Correct Rivet Hole Size

Even with the chart above, it’s important to verify the rivet hole size for your specific project. Follow these steps to ensure accuracy:

Step 1: Identify Your Rivet Type and Size

First, check the specifications of your rivets to find their exact diameter inch and metric). Common rivet types include Aluminium Steel blind rivets (pop rivets),Stainless Steel Blind Rivets, solid rivets, structural rivets, and tubular rivets—each may have slight variations in recommended hole size, so always confirm the rivet’s details

Step 2: Match to the Rivet Hole Size Chart

Use the chart above to find the corresponding hole size for your rivet diameter. If you’re working with a less common rivet size, refer to the manufacturer’s guidelines—most rivet brands provide a rivet hole size guide for their products.

Step 3: Test on Scrap Material

If you’re working with expensive or delicate materials, drill a test hole in a scrap piece first. Insert the rivet to check the fit: it should slide in easily but not wiggle freely. If it’s too tight,If stainless steel or structural blind rivets are used,We recommend 0.1~0.2mm tolerance be added to the hole diameter.

; if it’s too loose, use a smaller drill bit.

Drilling Tips for Perfect Rivet Holes

Even if you have the right rivet hole size, poor drilling technique can ruin the hole. Follow these tips to drill clean, precise holes:

● Use the right drill bit:For metal materials (steel, aluminum), use a high-speed steel (HSS) or cobalt drill bit. For wood or plastic, a standard twist drill bit works. Ensure the drill bit is sharp—dull bits will create rough, irregular holes.

● Secure the material:Clamp the materials being joined together tightly to prevent movement during drilling. This ensures the hole is straight and aligned through both pieces.

● Drill at a slow, steady speed:High speed can overheat the drill bit and the material, leading to warping or rough edges. For metal, use a slow drill speed (2000-3000 RPM) and apply light pressure.

● Deburr the hole:After drilling, use a deburring tool or a countersink bit to remove any burrs or sharp edges around the hole. This helps the rivet seat evenly and prevents damage to the rivet shank.

● Measure twice, drill once:Double-check the drill bit size and the rivet diameter before drilling. A simple measurement with a caliper can save you from costly mistakes.

Common Rivet Hole Size Mistakes

Even experienced DIY and professionals make mistakes with rivet hole size. Here are the most common issues and how to resolve them:

1: Hole is too small

2: Hole is too large

3: Hole is not round or straight
