How to Remove Tri Fold Rivets?
1. Basic Knowledge About Tri-Fold Rivets Before Removal
1.1 What Is a Tri-Fold Rivets
Tri-fold rivet is a three-fold blind rivet. When installed, its tail splits into three folds to lock two metal panels tightly. Unlike standard pop rivets, its folded claw structure makes removal trickier.
1.2 When You Need to Pull Out Tri-Fold Rivets
- Replace damaged sheet metal panels
- Disassemble cabinets, equipment frames or vehicle body parts
- Re-drill holes for new fasteners .
2. Tools to Remove Tri-Fold Rivets
2.1 Basic Household & Workshop Tools
Center punch, electric drill + metal drill bits, flat chisel, small hammer, needle nose pliers, safety goggles
2.2 Special Tools (For Thick Metal)
Rivet removal bit, rotary file, angle grinder with thin cutting disc
3. Two Main Working Methods to Remove Tri Fold Rivets
3.1 Drill Out the Rivet Head
- Fix the partsteady on a bench clamp, wear safety glasses first.
- Use a center punch to dent the center of the tri fold rivet cap, stop the drill from slipping.
- Pick a drill bit slightly smaller than the rivet shaft diameter. Drill straight down to grind off the entire top cap.
- Tap the leftover rivet shaft out from the back side with a punch and small hammer.
3.2 Chisel & Plier Split Removal (No Power Drill Needed)
- Place the flat chisel edge under the edge of the tri fold rivet head.
- Tap the chisel lightly with a hammer to pry up one side of the rivet cap.
- Repeat on the other two sides until the whole cap loosens.
- Grab the exposed folded three claws with needle nose pliers and twist to pull the whole rivet out backward.
4. Critical Safety & Damage Avoidance Tips
4.1 Safety Rules During Operation
- Never operate drills or grinders without eye protection; metal chips fly easily.
- Clamp parts firmly, do not hold workpieces by hand while drilling.
4.2 How Not to Ruin Your Metal Panels
- Do not use an oversized drill bit, it will widen the mounting hole.
- Tap gently when prying with a chisel, hard hits bend thin aluminum or steel sheets.
- For thin decorative panels, choose the drill method instead of chiseling to prevent surface scratches.
5. Troubleshooting Stuck Tri Fold Rivets
5.1 Rivet Shaft Stuck Inside the Hole
Spray a little penetrating oil on both sides, wait 5 minutes, then push the shaft out with a punch.
5.2 Broken Claws Left Inside the Panel Hole
Use a tiny rotary file to grind residual claw fragments, then clean debris before re-fitting new rivets.
6.New Tri Fold Rivet Installation
Clear all metal filings and burrs around the hole. Check if the hole diameter stays standard; ream slightly only if the hole deformed badly. Install new tri fold rivets to re-fasten your panels.
